Rabbits Rescued From Slaughter!

Farm Sanctuary has come to the rescue of six rabbits who were being used as part of a veterinary school teaching project, and we need your help. After their time was up at the university, the instructors were planning to slaughter the rabbits for food. Thankfully, a compassionate student intervened and Farm Sanctuary was able to secure custody of the rabbits.

Update 1/26/2007

All six rabbits, now named Chester, Charo, Dagwood, Jean, Tootsie Roll, and Bruce are enjoying their new lives at our New York Shelter. Though shy and fearful upon arrival, they are warming up to their daily routines and caregivers. Since coming to the sanctuary, the rabbits have paired off, each choosing a special companion from their original "gang of six." Dagwood and Jean, the most bashful of the six, live together in a special room in the rabbit barn. Although they are still the shyest, they are becoming more and more interested in the humans who come to visit them in their room. It is common for animals who come to Farm Sanctuary from abusive situations to have a great fear of humans at first. We have seen time and time again, however, the inspiring transition animals often make once they realize they are truly safe and free to be themselves.

Tootsie Roll and Bruce, the second couple, are also sweet and shy, though very inquisitive. Each day they become a little bolder, hopping right up to caregivers and giving them a sniff. Chester and Charo are the most social and spirited of the pairings. They welcome the company of humans, and love when people come to just sit with them. All of the pairs spend their days hopping and running in their barns and playing with rabbit toys. When they rest, they often groom each other while snuggling in their warm straw. Surprisingly, each pair consists of a white New Zealand rabbit and a gray Chinchilla rabbit, which they chose all on their own!

HOMES NEEDED! We are seeking adoptive homes for the rabbits. Because each of the rabbits has chosen a friend to live with, and they have bonded with each other, they will need to be adopted in their pairs. All three couples would make wonderful companions, and fantastic house rabbits, which we recommend to our adopters. If you are able to provide a loving home, please contact us at shelter@farmsanctuary.org or call 607-583-2225 ext. 266.

Harlem Chicken

"Mystery" Birds from Harlem Come Home

Darting through traffic and foraging for food on sidewalks, Autumn turkey and her 13 chicken friends became the talk of New York City when they appeared on 125th Street in Harlem and mystified residents who are still trying to figure out how they got there. Read the story.
