Piglet Rescued Off Highway in Ohio Now Calls Farm Sanctuary Home

Terrin was rescued off a busy Ohio road, after apparently falling from a trailer crowded with pigs. Sadly, in the world of livestock transport, where drivers often dangerously overcrowd their trucks to ensure maximum profitability for each delivery load, it is not uncommon for pigs to fall out onto the roadway, becoming what the industry calls "acceptable losses." Accidents are common too because of the pressure on drivers to move as many animals as possible, as fast as possible. Each year in the United States, hundreds of thousands of pigs die during transport, either as a result of stress or injury caused by loading, unloading and overcrowding, or in horrific crashes, where the helpless animals are often tossed from overburdened trucks and left to suffer and die by the side of the road.

Terrin was very lucky to be saved. She was fortunate enough to be found by a woman who saw how serious the piglet's plight was and could not turn a blind eye. Wanting to do everything she could to help, Terrin's rescuer scooped the piglet up off the ground, carried her to her home and began calling friends for assistance. Eventually, she contacted Farm Sanctuary, and we happily agreed to take Terrin in. A short time later, the piglet arrived at our New York Shelter, where she was greeted by our doting staff of caregivers.

Unlike so many millions of other pigs who die during transport and at slaughterhouses each year, Terrin now has a long, happy life to look forward to. She made fast friends with two other rescued piglets, Rudy and Truffles, and has enthusiastically adjusted to the slow, peaceful pace of sanctuary life. Although she may once have been considered merely an "acceptable loss" by the pork industry, to those at Farm Sanctuary Terrin is a priceless member of the family. Now nearly full grown pigs, Rudy, Truffles and Terrin

Adoptive sponsors are needed to help provide for Terrin's lifelong care at Farm Sanctuary. To be that special someone to a very special pig, please click here or contact us at (607) 583-2225 ext. 225.
