Farm Sanctuary Opens Barn Doors To Sheep Found In Bronx

The 7-month-old lamb likely escaped from a slaughterhouse or auction.

Watkins Glen, NY - June 15, 2007 - A lamb found wandering an industrial section of the South Bronx will find a new home at Farm Sanctuary's New York Shelter today. New York City police picked up the animal after she had been cornered in a parking lot by a warehouse worker. Police took the 65-pound, 7-month-old lamb to the Manhattan branch of the New York City Animal Care & Control where she was provided with food, water and clean bedding.

The lamb had tags in her ear indicating she was either sold or to be sold, likely for slaughter. She is scheduled to arrive at Farm Sanctuary, the nation's leading farm animal protection organization, Friday, June 15. At the sanctuary, the lamb will be given shelter and healthcare for the rest of her life.

"We welcome this beautiful creature to our shelter just as we have opened our arms to the hundreds of other animals rescued from abuse who now reside here," said Susie Coston, Farm Sanctuary Shelter Director. "This girl's story has captured hearts-and headlines-around the nation. Hopefully, the details of her escape will make people think twice about the filthy conditions food animals are forced to endure and the horrible death that comes to those less lucky than our lamb."

The lamb becomes the 101st animal rescued from the New York City area and brought to the New York Shelter in 2007. She's also one of a handful of animals residing at the shelter who are slaughterhouse escapees joining: Queenie, a cow found running New York City streets; Annie Dodge, a cow on the lam in Vermont; and Cinci Freedom, another cow who jumped a slaughterhouse wall. The New York Shelter, which is open to the public for tours, houses more than 700 other farm animals rescued from cruelty and neglect.
