Farm Sanctuary Launches "Say No To Veal" Ad Campaign in New York

New York, NY- July 16, 2001 - This summer, New Yorkers will feel the heat of Farm Sanctuary's "Say No To Veal" message with the launching of a major broadcast and print advertising campaign that seeks to educate the masses about the inhumane treatment of veal calves. Unveiled on May 20th at a celebrity Gala at New York's Plaza Hotel, and designed by Bill Oberlander, the campaign seeks to bridge the species barrier by urging people to think about the torture of innocent babies.

Already distributed on Go Cards and running in Dan's Papers, Street News, and other newspapers as far west as Wilkes-Barre, PA, this innovative and powerful message is slated for placement in a variety of print, broadcast, and outdoor media throughout the summer. American consumers have grown increasingly concerned about the cruel methods used in "food animal production," and veal consumption has decreased from almost three pounds per person in the mid 1970s to less than one pound per person today. Other countries have banned veal crates and other intensive confinement systems for humane reasons. According to Farm Sanctuary Director, Gene Baur (formerly Bauston), "Methods used to produce veal are grossly inhumane, and cause animals to suffer both physical and psychological disorders. It is time to outlaw this cruelty in the United States, just as it has been outlawed in other developed countries."

New York City has been targeted since it is one of the top areas in the country for veal consumption. Last year, nearly thirty of the city's top restaurants signed Farm Sanctuary's pledge not to serve "white" veal. In May of this year, a Zogby America poll found four out of five New Yorkers oppose the intensive confinement of calves and the deficient diet they are fed in order to produce the pale-colored flesh sold as "white" veal.
