Farm Sanctuary's California Shelter Open to the Public for 2007 Tour Season

Orland, CA - April 5, 2007 - Farm Sanctuary, the nation’s leading farm animal rescue, education and advocacy organization, announced today that its Orland, Calif., shelter will open for tours on Saturday, April 7. The Orland sanctuary is a 300-acre shelter home to more than 400 cows, chickens, ducks, geese, turkeys, pigs, sheep, rabbits, and goats. Farm Sanctuary’s shelters rescue, rehabilitate and provide lifelong care for farm animals who have been rescued from stockyards, factory farms, slaughterhouses, and cruelty cases. Here, the animals are given all the care and love needed to recover from abuse and neglect.

Farm Sanctuary’s "animal ambassadors" have a very special way of reaching and teaching people, and these shelters are sanctuaries for people as much as they are for farm animals. Farm Sanctuary shelters offer farm tours, overnight accommodations, retreats, weddings, and conferences.

Later this summer, guests will be able to visit with Billy, Phoenix and Casey, three new baby calves who were rescued in late January. They were born on dairy farms and slated for slaughter, but Farm Sanctuary negotiated the release of these sickly newborn calves and immediately took them to the U.C. Davis Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital for evaluation and treatment. They continue to grow stronger and healthier every day and they will be introduced to the main cattle herd later this summer, where they can freely graze and roam the pastures and meet any visitors to the sanctuary. The 2007 California Shelter season runs from April 7 through Nov. 24. Guided tours are offered on Saturdays, every hour on the hour, from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m. On tour days, Farm Sanctuary guests are also welcome to browse a unique visitor center and country gift shop.

In addition, Farm Sanctuary offers reservations for overnight stays at the Country Cabin in California. Accommodations can also be found nearby in the town of Orland, Calif.

Directions: Farm Sanctuary is located just west of Orland, about 1½ hours north of Sacramento and approximately 45 minutes west of Chico. From Interstate 5, take the Orland exit marked Chico/Rt. 32 (Exit 619). Turn west off of the freeway onto Newville Road (a.k.a. Road 200). Travel approximately 10 miles until you see Farm Sanctuary on the right at 19080 Newville Rd.
