Fresh Air, Farm Animals Mark First-Ever Caring Kids Festival
Children are invited to enjoy a special day of games, learning and fun at Farm Sanctuary.
Watkins Glen, NY - August 28, 2007 - It beats a stuffy classroom, and leaves multiplication tables in the dust. It's the Caring Kids Festival at Farm Sanctuary's New York Shelter, a day-long program designed to bring children and farm animals together.
Farm Sanctuary, the nation's leading farm animal protection organization, opens its barn doors on Monday, Sept. 3, welcoming children and their families to this first-ever event. The day is jam-packed with crafts, animal-free treats, games, and activities, including the "veggie olympics," where children are invited to show off their veg-powered athletic prowess. Guided tours of the farm are also a part of the afternoon, and children can encounter many of our rescued shelter residents, including Chicky, a superstar turkey; J.D., a rambunctious piglet; and Joey, a friendly goat.
"The kids will be able to stretch their wings on the farm, and, through a hands-on approach to education, really gain an understanding of farm animals' lives," said Michelle Waffner, Farm Sanctuary education manager. "Kids bring such a great energy to our shelter. They're so excited to learn about ways they can help the animals."
The Caring Kids Festival is held from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Admission is free; no registration is required. Call 607-583-2225 ext. 221 for more details, or go to www.farmsanctuary.org. Non-dairy ice cream from Turtle Mountain will be provided to guests.
Directions to our New York Shelter: From Watkins Glen, follow Route 409 West (up hill on Fourth Street) and turn right onto Route 23/28. Stay on Route 23 as it branches off to the left (one mile). Continue on Route 23 for eight miles, then turn left onto Aikens Road. Follow Aikens Road for two miles until you see the People Barn on the left. Look for Farm Sanctuary signs along the way.
