Program Options
- Safe
at Farm Sanctuary
If cows, pigs and chickens were as happy as they are portrayed in many
advertisements and children's books, they would not need sanctuaries.
Using age-appropriate pictures, videos and activities, we take a peek
inside the modern factory farm and compare it with Farm Sanctuary's
upstate New York shelter. (Grades 3-6 and 7-12)
- What's
Wrong with Being Chicken?: Animal Stereotypes
Whether an animal is considered awful or awesome influences the way
that animal is treated. Each one is a unique and important strand in
the web of life, as is each human being. By examining their own tendencies
toward discrimination and prejudice, students learn to replace fear
and mistrust with respect and compassionate choices. (Grades 3-6 and
7-12)
- It's
Fine to be Kind!: Making Humane Choices
The Golden Rule helps younger students develop respect for animals as
they learn to treat animals the way they themselves would like to be
treated. Games and videos provide exciting insights into the incredible
world of animals while encouraging students to make positive, compassionate
choices. (Grades 3-6)
- Lifestyles
of the Eco-Friendly
A typical Saturday in the life of an eco-friendly consumer is condensed
into one hour of interactive learning and fun. Students discover how
simple, everyday choices affect animals, the environment and other people.
(Grades 5-college)
- Animals
and the Law: Meet "Animal Protection Bill"
Why are some animals protected by the law and others not? In the perplexing
area of legal rights for animals, it is crucial to encourage students
to take part in their government. In a fast-paced, entertaining way,
Animal Protection Bill helps students understand the process of lawmaking,
the difficulties of enforcement and the ways they can help change things
for the better. (Grades 6-college
- Beyond
Violence
The way we treat animals is reflected in the way we treat each other.
By examining our relationships with animals and our attitudes toward
them, we discover ways of moving beyond violence and fostering a more
compassionate society. (Grades 6-college)
- Expanding
the Circle of Compassion
How would an alien visiting this planet perceive the dissimilar treatment
of similar species some being treated like pets and some like
products? Students will grapple with the ethical and social issues surrounding
the treatment of animals and consider how their actions and attitudes
can promote a more compassionate world. (Grades 6-college)
- Our
Food, Our World
Take a closer look at an interest we all have in common food!
Learn how what we eat affects the lives of every other being on the
planet and influences the natural world from the rainforests to our
own backyards. Discuss the impact of our food choices on our bodies,
animals, and the environment. (Grades 7-college)
- Wildlife
and the Environment
How do we balance the needs of people against those of animals and ecosystems?
As pollution, habitat destruction and human actions contribute to mass
extinctions, explore how our personal choices and attitudes can make
a difference to the world around us. (Grades 8-college)
Summer Programs
Farm Sanctuary's summer programs offer young people opportunities to learn
about animals and the environment through projects, trips and visits to
our upstate shelter. Participants in our Sanctuary Seminar will discuss
animal issues, design campaigns, view videos, and practice critical thinking
skills, often in a beautiful outdoor setting. We can also come to you,
bringing Cultivating Compassion programs to your summer camp setting.
